Suggested Short Form Specification

Cementitious fireproofing materials in the areas indicated on the drawings or in the specifications shall be covered with Southwest Fireproofing Type HCTM Hard Clad. It shall be applied by an approved applicator    to the required thickness in all areas to receive Hard Clad. Mixing and application procedures shall comply with Southwest Fireproofing’s recommendations, as set forth in current literature.

Suggested Standard Specification

1.0 SCOPE

    1.1 Work Included

1.1.1 Provide materials, labor equipment and services necessary to furnish, deliver and install all                                work as shown on the drawings, as specified herein, and/or as required by job conditions.

    1.2 Work Not Included

1.2.1 Installation of clips, hanger supports, and other attachments to the substrate receiving fireproofing   and Hard Clad must be placed by others prior to application of the fireproofing and Hard Clad material.

1.2.2 Ducts, piping, conduit or other suspended equipment that interfere with the uniform application of     Southwest Fireproofing Type HCTM Hard Clad shall be positioned after Type HCTM application has been     completed.

    1.2.3 Concrete encasement of steel structure.

    1.2.4 Trowelled plaster.

2.0 PRODUCTS

    2.1 Materials

2.1.2 The fireproofing Hard Clad material shall be Type HCTM as manufactured by Southwest Fireproofing Products Co.

2.1.2 Mixing water shall be clean, fresh and suitable for domestic consumption and free from mineral or organic substances that would affect the set of the Hard Clad material.

3.0 PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

    3.1 The fireproofing Hard Clad shall not endanger the fire resistive ratings of the assembly.

3.2 The Hard Clad material shall be applied to the fireproofing to the proper thickness as indicated on       the drawings.

    3.3 Hard Clad thickness must not be included in the required fireproofing thickness.

3.4 The fireproofing Hard Clad shall be a factory mixed material. The material shall be applied to       provide compliance with specified performance specification and test criteria. Approved performance   criteria shall be:

3.4.1 Dry density of the fireproofing Hard Clad shall be a minimum of 57 PCF (910 Kg.m3) when tested      in accordance with ASTM E-605.

3.4.2 Compressive strength of the cured Hard Clad shall be 450 PSI (32 Kg.cm2) when tested in    accordance with ASTM C-354.

3.4.3 The bond strength of the Hard Clad shall exceed the cohesive strength of the fireproofing when    tested in accordance with ASTM C-763.

3.4.4 Hard Clad shall have a minimum hardness of 50 as determined by testing in accordance with        ASTM D-2240.

3.4.5 Hard Clad shall have a penetration resistance of 750 PSI (126Kg/cm2) tested in accordance with   ASTM C-569.

 4.0 PREPARATION, DELIVERY AND INSPECTION

4.1 Hard Clad shall be delivered in original unopened packages bearing the name of the manufacturer      and the product identification.

4.2 The material shall be kept dry until ready to use. The packages of material shall be kept off the    ground, under cover and away from damp surfaces. All bags that have been exposed to water before       use shall be discarded.

5.0 APPLICATION

5.1 Application of Hard Clad shall be by qualified applicators in accordance with the current printed instructions of Southwest Fireproofing Products Co.

5.2 Temperature and enclosure conditions shall be required to prevent freezing or damage to                    the material.

5.2.1 Minimum air and substrate temperature of 400F (4.50C) shall be maintained for 24 hours before      and after application of the Hard Clad.

5.3 The Southwest Fireproofing Type HCTM Hard Clad shall be mixed with water only, in accordance        with manufacturer’s instructions.

5.4 Provisions shall be made for ventilation to properly dry the Hard Clad after application. Enclosed      areas lacking natural ventilation require mechanical air movement to assure proper curing and drying.

5.5 Patching and repairing of fireproofing damaged by other trades shall be performed under this section  and paid for by the trades causing the damage, prior to application of the Hard Clad.

5.6 The Hard Clad material may be spray or trowel applied to specified thickness. Sufficient thickness readings must be taken to insure that specified thickness has been attained.

6.0 CLEAN UP

6.1 During application of the Hard Clad by spraying, all exposed areas not to receive Hard Clad shall be protected from over-spray. The over-spray shall be removed prior to its initial set.
